UTn was notorious for using this strategy when they got wind of NCAA heat. They would admit "minor" infractions, and would either suspend a player for a game or two, or at most, would self-impose reduction of a scholarship.
NCAA would buy it and go away.

Meh, this happens every year at every school. And, Never OP? Did you follow college football circa 2001? Unfortunately I was a freshmen at Bama at the time.
