Kneed to Burn Calories

Based on the discussion in the pod today. I had to give up running five years ago because of my knees. What my knees will tolerate to burn 1000 calories in an hour is this. 20 Minutes on elliptical, 20 rowing, 20 uphill walking on a treadmill. Oocasionally mix in 20 on a stationary bike but that knocks the calorie burn down a little. Been doing it 4 days a week for years with little knee problem. The other days I do an hour in the off the main trail routes at Whirlpool Trails. Something about the uneven terrain helps. If I walk a half hour on streets or concrete the knees will bark but seldom in the woods

State’s coaching search

Per Rosebowl…

Barry Odom is politicking hard behind the scenes for the State job.

Doesn’t believe Jamey Chadwell is a serious candidate because he’s waiting on a bigger job and doesn’t think State can afford his buyout.

Joe Judge has had some conversations with State officials and he’s pushing hard for the job. Considers it a dream job and he’s reached out to some potential assistants to potentially join him.

Todd Monken was mentioned over the weekend as a wild card name but no real smoke there.

Good lord what disaster of a coaching search if that’s what he’s hearing

UGA NIL Vodka

I’ve mentioned before that I live in North Georgia when I’m not in God’s country. Well, I returned to my non-football home a little over a week ago and stopped in to my favorite liquor store. It’s not a big place - probably about half the size of High Cotton - but my man keeps a good supply of bourbon. This time he had a nice display front and center of the “Hunker Down” vodka that supports the UGA NIL collective. He’s not a Bulldog fan (he is from India, went to college in Australia, and lived for years in New York). But he is a good businessman. He said he bought 25 cases and sold about half of it the first weekend and expects to sell out by the end of the year. Again, this is a small store about 30 miles from Atlanta and 50 miles from Athens. He also proudly displayed a badge that they gave him so he could attend practice. I suspect the bigger stores are doing the same thing.

I know the GC has a vodka, but I haven’t heard much about it and certainly haven’t seen any displays up front at High Cotton. This isn’t offered as a criticism. I think the GC is doing good things. It’s just an observation of what one of the big boys is doing.

Arnett

I'm gonna post Steve's message from last night. He had been hinting at a type of "Hearing..." post. If you don't want to hear about or don't care, move on to the next post. No offense taken. Some will be interested because it is a fairly talked about topic on our side. In short, doesn't sound like an imminent coaching change.

On Sunday, I got a couple of calls about the Mississippi State football program. While those folks didn't have a lot of information to share, their questions were similar. It wouldn't ordinarily concern me, but these two people don't really associate much together. I've learned to never take anything for granted, especially when multiple sources have some level of commonality. As a result of those calls, I did some digging.
I spoke to a couple of friends in the agent world who tell me that there has been zero conversation about Mississippi State making a change this season other than just the normal speculation this time of year. Agents are gearing up for the silly season and doing their due diligence. Both parties I spoke to said that there would be some serious interest in the Mississippi State job should it come open, but so far they haven't heard anything that suggests change is coming this year. One of them said it's simply premature to think along those lines with a month to go in the season and that he had heard nothing about State having any feelers out at this point.
With that information in hand, I reached out to some sources on the Mississippi State side who backed up what I was told earlier. I was told that anyone suggesting that State had made a decision about moving towards a change was not getting that information from campus. One person shared that it hadn't even been discussed. Yes, there are some concerns about the season, but there is still a month to go and anything can happen in four weeks of football. One contact said that they still have a tremendous amount of confidence in the current staff and that they remain confident that nothing happens this year. I believe that is likely true unless there is a total collapse in November.
I was also informed that there is also the possibility that State has to make multiple hires in other major sports this year for people leaving for one reason or another. Some may leave and some may get left. I am not going to speculate about all of that, but you keep up with Mississippi State sports. You know some of the possibilities. I think the potential comings and goings are something to consider for a lot of reasons.
I had two people today share that they have a lot of confidence in Zac Selmon to make a good football hire when that time comes whenever it comes. Zac is from a football family and played Power Five football himself. He has contacts. He has friends, former teammates and opponents in the college coaching profession. He knows people and people know him. Zac also understands college football from the insider's point of view, so he understands how the game is managed and played. He understands the demands of it all. It is not something he is going to discount or make emotional decisions about. The central point in that is he won't make a reactionary decision. It will be well thought out on all fronts.
What I believe to be true is that there is not a movement towards a coaching change at this point. That may change depending on the outcome of the season, but I don't believe the conversation is really even entertained without a losing record in the regular season.

I have a crush on Chris Beard

Login to view embedded media This guy is truly incredible. He knows how to truly build a program. We gotta find just a little extra money for him without taking away from Lane (I won’t say where I think it should come from ) because if he gets a few dudes, the Pavilion will be a top 20 basketball environment and the program will experience things that it never has before. He’s a master salesman and he has me believing that he wants to win not just for himself, but for all of us.

Lane Presser

@Neal McCready

Neal, why didn’t you ask Lane how important the Egg Bowl rivalry is to him personally? How motivated he is to win this state championship? If his pregame speech will be fire and brimstone because the opponent is State? We need more of those questions. We only had 20 of them in a row from other beat reporters.

Please explain yourself!
