FOOTBALL IN TUPELO
Neal and I were in Tupelo, as you know, for the National Select 7-on-7 Regional Qualifier where we were able to break Kendrick Doss' commitment to Ole Miss. I watched Doss lead his team to wins over Center Hill and Shannon before we left. He has an incredibly strong arm and, as you would expect, he moves well side to side. He has a tendency to hold the ball a little long and missed some reads, but those are fixable issues. At this link you can watch the action when it gets archived.
There were several other players for Florence we'll have stories on in the coming days. 2015 linebacker Keaton Anderson has tons of Tennessee ties, but Ole Miss and Alabama are also major schools of interest. His sister goes to Ole Miss and he's visited a few times this past semester. He was offered by Alabama last month. Anderson is extremely physical - even in 7 on 7 - and definitely looks the part. He's going to be a heck of a player for somebody. Tennessee is considered the heavy favorite because of the family ties, but he said that's not playing in his decision. I believe him. The Vols are the favorite, but there's a potential opening for another school.
Dee Smith, Rashawn Smith's little brother, and Roland Adams are also 2015 prospects at Florence to watch. Those two and Anderson are invited to the Rivals100 Underclass Challenge in Dallas next week. Smith was a cover standout linebacker at the Rivals Camp Series stop in Hoover earlier this year and should start hearing from teams soon. He has a chance for his stock to big-time climb in Dallas. Adams is a 190-pound running back who should continue to grow. I'll be curious to see how he performs in Dallas. He showed great hands out of the backfield today, hauling in two close-range lasers from Doss to tie the game and take the lead against Shannon.
BASEBALL
Brady Bramlett had a successful surgery to repair his labrum. He'll miss the 2014 season, but everything points to a complete recovery, so that's the good news.
Christian Helsel suffered an elbow injury recently and won't return to the Rebels. I've heard he'll need UCL surgery. I don't know his next destination. He's an outstanding young man, so it's awful news to hear he had that substantial of an injury.
Ole Miss recently picked up three commits: 2014 RHP Will Stokes out of West Lauderdale and 2015 prospects RHP Connor Greene out of Collierville, Tenn., and Grey Fenter, a third baseman, who is ranked No. 65 nationally by Perfect Game. Stokes' mother, father and brother went to MSU, but he chose Ole Miss over the Bulldogs.
