Really thrilled with our spring, obviously coached a lot of spring practices and can't remember one being better in effort. Obviously things we can clean up but it's certainly the most effort we can get out of the young men for 15 days. It was physical for 12 of those days and extremely competitive and really pleased with effort. That competitive nature is big in taking the next step in our program. We've added depth through recruiting and Paul Jackson has done a great job developing young men. Having the same staff has paid dividends.
We made a distinct effort to raise expectations this spring. You can't take the next step in this journey without having a physical and demanding spring practice. We have to weigh pros and cons with depth issues, but we made the decision to press the accelerator and have a physical spring. That's been huge.
A lot of them think of the sophomores of the future, but they are part of the team. They can't do it by themselves. They had phenomenal springs. Laquon can be really special. He's so gifted. As are the others. They've supplied a foundation. I'm excited about Jones and Moore and Engram and Bouldin and Wilkins and Dodson. That class has the upper echelon talent we need. They give us a great foundation.
Not knowing the No. 2 QB is a good problem. That's not a tough decision. Not having a No. 2 is a tough decision. Not long ago we didn't know who the number one was. They've been good. We'll talk to Jeremy next week. It'll be hard for him to function in our offense for a long amount of time, but he can help us with a skill set that most big men don't have. We have to figure out what he needs to look like and where he can help us. I want to watch the competition between Ryan and Devante. They've been really good. Ryan has natural pocket presence you can't teach. Kincade does things with his feet and arm. I'm excited about that competition.
Not sure if that points system is reflective of much. Not good for offense that defense won the third downs today. We have to be more competitive and convert third and shorts. Go figure out if we executed. Turned it over twice in that period, that's not good at all. Offense did well otherwise. Offense won the from the 30 scrimmage. Red zone was even. It was a decent day. If one side dominates the whole thing you don't feel good about your chances at the team. Next time we put the jersey on we'll be on the same team and be undefeated.
Paul Jackson and his staff take over now. We finished earlier than most schools. He'll put them through a program to lose or gain weight and add to them the recruiting class that gets here this summer. We can look at our board and feel good about depth at most places.
I only talk about one expectation and that's to win each day leading up to Atlanta to play Boise State. I know that we're better than we were two years ago or last year. I know that. Does that mean expectations grow? I don't know what it means in the win column. No one in this conference goes backwards. I just want to win the day each day going to play Boise.
We were without Christian and Aaron this spring and playing walkons in the two deep, but Conyers and Still and Golson have had good days. Daronte has been good. Matt is a great coach and he's developing those guys. We have a couple more coming and get another class in here, but they definitely got better this spring.
Our team changed at midyear when Haynes, Brown, Alford, Hampton, those guys in here. Our team changed the way it looks. You run them on the field. We lost CJ last year and I don't know how many times we won a one on one pass rush the rest of the year. You have to win one on ones and win with speed. Haynes reminds me of CJ coming out of high school.
Collins Moore and Cliff Coleman were much better this spring than last fall. They were the most improved players. And I thinik Mathers is special. We have good backs, but Mathers breaks runs and today he made a phenomenal run. He's making guys miss in space. I'm excited about a lot of the backs, but Mathers jumps out. Christian Russell is exciting, as well. Temario is coming on and had a good day. Bryon Bennett has turned a corner with buy-in percentage, doing the little things. He could have a special year.
Laremy tweaked an ankle, but he could have played.
