I'll add the recap when it's available.
HERE'S THE BOX SCORE
That was a huge win for Ole Miss, beating Kentucky, 12-4, on a the strength of a six-run inning. Ole Miss really played well and now needs to finish the weekend and take the series. Ole Miss (31-12, 11-8) rose to No. 7 nationally in RPI after the win. The Rebels are 3-7 against the top 25, 8-9 against top 50 and 13-11 against the top 11. Kentucky fell to No. 11 in RPI after the loss.
Tomorrow's game is at 12 Mississippi time and on CSS.
The Rebels led 7-0 after three innings and raced past Kentucky early, running ace A.J. Reed after 70 pitches and just three innings. Kentucky (27-15, 9-10) used the bottom of its bullpen, but it was still bullpen innings, so that was good moving forward. UK SID Brent Ingram wondered if Reed could pitch some Sunday, but I would be very surprised if that happened.
Offense is the story, but Chris Ellis was tremendous. The Ole Miss Friday night starter allowed five hits and just a Reed two-run home run in seven innings. He struck out five, walked three and threw 68 strikes in 110 pitches. Only four outs were in the air, and that was huge at the stadium where the fences are short and the ball carries out well. Kentucky hit two home runs, but it didn't matter. Ellis shut them down and used ground balls to do his work.
Matt Denny pitched the final two innings. The Rebels' bullpen is intact, and Aaron Greenwood traveled and is on the trip.
Ole Miss racked up 15 hits including three from Will Allen and two from Sikes Orvis, Auston Bousfield, Errol Robinson and Preston Overbey. Orvis hit a solo home run, his 10th which is second in the SEC. Overbey tripled and doubled, and Allen and JB Woodman also doubled. That's a big night for Overbey who needed some confidence. He drove the baseball well Friday.
Ole Miss did all that damage with leadoff man Braxton Lee going 0-for-6 at the plate.
Orvis' other hit was an off-the-wall single. He's crushing the baseball, and the strikeouts are irrelevant. His blueprint this season is exactly what you hoped for from him.
The Rebels were 7-of-18 with runners in scoring position, 10-of-22 with runners on and 6-of-15 with two outs. Ole Miss had six two-out RBI and scored the runner from third with less than two outs all three times it was a possibility.
Kentucky advanced a runner on base on just three of 17 opportunities.
