Cowboys super scout and super nice guy passes away at 91. May he rest in peace.
It's my opinion that the 60's-70's Cowboys were actually better at getting other teams to give up draft picks for the Cowboy's JAGS (And also finding great rookie free agents) than being overwhelmingly awesome drafters. They had some real duds, (Dennis Homan anyone?) but when you can get the Oilers to give up a high 1st for Tody Smith (Which turned into Too Tall) and the Giants to give up a high 1st and more for Craig Morton (Randy White) it all works out.
However, by the late 70's, Gil lost his drafting fastball as Dallas had some spectacularly bad drafts. It was only his rookie free agent finds like Everson Walls that saved them for a while longer.
Still, he succeeded a lot more than he failed and deserves all the accolades that he's gotten.
R.I.P. Gil.
