We probably didn’t put enough attention in the offseason into the fact that pretty much every rule change the last few years, and especially before this season, has significantly limited the HUNH/tempo offense.
That was, obviously, a huge piece of our run game and overall scheme. To notice the difference in how tempo stresses a defense versus not running tempo, all you had to do was watch our games again Jimbo.
Now, the ref stands over the ball and actively tries to limit the offense having the advantage. The play volume has been greatly reduced making each possession more valuable and removing the advantage of being prepared for high play volume.
The in-game communication has leveled the playing field for the defense, not been a cheat code for the offense. That was a bad read.
