Good Saturday morning to all of you. We'll update this as necessary throughout the day. Ole Miss and La Tech kick off tonight at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. We'll have complete coverage from that event.
On the coach-search front, our goal is to let you know as much as possible as the search moves on. I don't anticipate many leaks from officials, but we'll keep you as connected as possible -- using every channel we can think of. Let me emphasize again that it's incredibly early still in the process. Our educated opinion is that there won't be a head coach named for at least three weeks, and there will be multiple candidates interviewed.
I'll start today with a little new info on Rich Rodriguez. Of course, he's a main candidate at Tulane, but a source spotted one of Rodriguez's former assistants at a high school football game last night and jokingly asked, "When you guys relocating to Oxford?" The assistant coach startled our source somewhat with a serious answer. "We'll know more in a couple weeks, but there's some optimism."
So, there's that. I trust this source 100 percent. What's it mean? Beats the hell out of me. I'm curious if a coach would elect to disregard the Tulane gig with the hopes of landing something better.
The Texas Rivals.com site's Chip Brown, who is very, very good and dominated Texas' flirts with conference realignment, brought up Ole Miss' possible interest in Manny Diaz in Orangeblood.com's latest War Room.
Brown's remark below.
--I talked to a couple people in the know, and it doesn't appear the Manny Diaz speculation surrounding Ole Miss has much traction. The leading candidate for that gig appears to be Hugh Freeze at Arkansas State. So I wouldn't lose much sleep over the speculation about Diaz to Ole Miss. Not right now, anyway. (Brown)
We're not ready to agree with Freeze being the outright leader, but Brown is a really good reporter, and it'd be foolish to not at least listen to what he's saying. We do think Freeze is a strong candidate.
I edited our Head Coach Hot Board this morning. Skip Holtz's name hasn't been directly mentioned in a week, so we dropped him off the board for now. I also added Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone. His name keeps popping up, and it's to the point that it's something to at least listen to. There are connections that make a little sense, but it's way too early to think this is the path they are hoping to take. Nonetheless, here's been put on there, and our antennas are up on him a little bit.
