Well, that was an interesting start to Ole Miss' biggest recruiting weekend of the year -- and one of the top official visit weekends in the country this recruiting cycle. The Rebels have four of the top 20 players in the country on their campus at the moment -- Robert Nkemdiche (1), Laquon Treadwell (5), Laremy Tunsil (14) and Chris Jones (20).
Here's a link to yesterday's nuggets. Chad's thread is also hanging around the board.
Nkemdiche and Treadwell both rock star status nationally in this signing class and are two of Ole Miss' top recruiters currently. Denzel is Robert's host this weekend, but he's also very tight with Chief Brown and others. Robert will announce on ESPN on National Signing Day, but at least to anyone around here, there doesn't seem to be any drama remaining.
By all accounts, the Oxford Square was a circus last night. Maybe it happens elsewhere, but I'm not aware of other communities having this type of impact on prospects during official visit weekends like this one. Look, it's official visits. They go well. People have great times, but the entire town helped recruiting last night it seems, and while it doesn't make a decision, it doesn't hurt either.
Chris Jones arrived sometime around of just after midnight last night. Jones had a basketball game at home against Leake Central and then came afterward. Jones' recruitment is interesting, but that's not the key deals at the moment. First, he's still committed to Mississippi State. Just getting him to campus doesn't make this automatic for the Rebels. It won't be the easiest thing by any means. However, with the current climate around whether he was visiting Ole Miss or going back to Starkville to help the Bulldogs recruit, Jones choosing Ole Miss carries a good bit of weight. While I think everybody is happy someone with his talent is getting to experience a visit or two and go through the process to whatever extent, he's not just taking a trip for the experience. There's too many people in Starkville not wanting that for it to be that simple. He has to see Oxford as a possible landing spot to go that route. It was obviously a difficult decision, as he didn't give anything away
to reporters all week -- other than telling Brandon Speck that he was
considering Ole Miss. Again, that's not me citing sources or anything. Just using some logic. To my knowledge, Hugh Freeze has his in-home visit still to go, as well.
Quincy Adeboyejo was supposed to announce his decision on Tuesday, but the four-star wide receiver announced a commitment to Ole Miss just a couple hours into his official visit. Here's the commitment story. He seemed to hit it off well with Treadwell and others last night. Adeboyejo was committed to Texas A&M until early January and took several other visits prior to his decision last night.
Rivals.com midlands analyst Jason Howell said this about Adeboyejo this morning: "Quincy is a guy who was under the radar until last spring, but early in the winter and spring months he began to create a buzz for his size and athleticism. As a senior he eclipsed his junior numbers in his first game, and was one of the top receivers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He does a great job of high pointing the ball and in addition to his catching abilities he is also a willing blocker."
He caught 91 balls for around 1,300 yards during the regular season as a senior, carrying Cedar from a 6-4 regular season to the state title game. His team lost its running back in the second game of the season but made it work with Adeboyejo and three other players that combined equaled his numbers. Ole Miss is getting a guy that is going to really care about his work and helping his team. Despite his play being the only reason Cedar was in the state title game, he had a couple drops in a 35-24 loss to Katy and blamed himself for all of it, going so far as to retweeting those who delivered criticism to him on Twitter. He scored seven touchdowns in the playoff run.
Herbert Moore is now in town this morning.
David Kamara will be here later today.
Some of the committed player hosts: Devante Kincade (Ja-Mes Logan), Peyton Barber (DT Shackelford), Daronte Bouldin (Emmanuel McCray).
Dan Skipper hung out with Christian Morgan and others a good bit last night. Early signs are that the visit is going well there, as Ole Miss is looking to sign possibly two more offensive linemen.
Things are also going very well with tight end Arshad Jackson. As Neal predicted the other day, wouldn't be stunned if he's next. Ole Miss really thinks Jackson can play early in this offense. He's been in town since lunch yesterday and has had a chance to see Oxford in a normal setting and in a crazy atmosphere like last night.
It's possible someone else shows up today, but we'll see. Jones was by far the most likely one, and that happened.
