Football practice at Ole Miss begins in one week, but there's plenty going on between now and then. We don't expect to hear word of any commitments today, but we can report to you that we expect more commitments to be forthcoming in the near future. Specifically, we expect decisions in the coming days from Clarksville, Tenn., ATH/LB Jaylen Reeves-Maybin and Alpharetta, Ga., RB Peyton Barber. JRM's decision might not come until Aug. 9 or 10, per sources, but others believe it's any day now. Virtually every source believes Ole Miss leads Tennessee for the versatile athlete. As for Barber, he's consistently said he'll announce on July 29, which is tomorrow, but some close to him believe it might be several more days until Barber makes his decision known. He returned from Arizona State late this week. Multiple sources tell us Ole Miss leads the Sun Devils and North Carolina for Barber's services, but it should be noted those sources have not talked to him about his impressions of Tempe just yet.
Another name to keep an eye on is Nashville, Tenn., Rivals250 ATH Cornelius Elder. Elder has spent his summer on the AAU hoops circuit, and right now, Elder is stating he prefers hoops to football, so much so that he might go the mid-major route instead of taking one of the many major-conference football offers he has. We've had a couple of sources tell us Ole Miss leads for Elder. We think that's a bit strong. Instead, we believe Elder is waiting for a football school where the basketball coach lets him know he'll be treated like a scholarship player. Two strong candidates along those lines, I'm hearing, are Tennessee and Ole Miss. Chase will post a Rivals.com video interview with Elder later this evening.
A source close to the Ole Miss program told me today the Rebels believe they're in the top three in the competitive race for Oakland Park, Fla., WR Stacy Coley. Coley is a Rivals100 prospect with dozens of offers. We'll follow up, obviously, and check that out, but the Rebels clearly are hoping to land an impact player at wide receiver in this class.
We're hearing more and more buzz that Ole Miss is in great shape for Hialeah, Fla., ILB George Williams. The Rebels would love to land Williams, Reeves-Maybin and Louisiana standout Duke Riley at linebacker. They appear to be in great shape for all three.
Finally, sources indicate Ole Miss has improved its chance in recent days for both Batesville, Miss., DB Antonio Conner and Fulton, Miss., ATH Ashton Shumpert. Neither of those players is anywhere close to a decision. Both are major Ole Miss targets.
