It's camp season, though the camps themselves have changed dramatically over the past couple of years.
Take Ole Miss, for example. Over the next couple of weeks, prospects will be dropping into Ole Miss for a camp session and/or some quality time with the Rebels' coaches. Here are some nuggets on some of the players expected in Oxford over the next few weeks.
Ole Miss is trying to get four-star wide receiver DaMarkus Lodge to Oxford this weekend. Ole Miss feels very good about him, though there's plenty of competition. Lodge is tight with former high school teammate/Ole Miss wide receiver Quincy Adeboyejo, and he's been public with his favorable impressions of the Rebels' recruiting efforts.
Pine Bluff, Ark., tight end Will Gragg is clearly Ole Miss' priority at that position, and per sources, there's reason for the Rebels to feel confident. Alabama recently added a tight end commitment, and some believe the Crimson Tide was Ole Miss' primary competition. In short, Ole Miss sources are confident regarding their chances with Gragg.
Several top Mississippi targets are due in Oxford at some point over the next few weeks, including defensive back Jamal Peters, offensive lineman Javon Patterson, linebacker Leo Lewis, Walnut defensive back Armani Linton and defensive end Fletcher Adams.
Peters has Ole Miss in his top five, but he'll make his second trip to Oxford on June 6. My sources believe it's Mississippi State, not LSU, that is the favorite for Peters. Patterson will come down to Ole Miss and Auburn, and my sources remain confident Patterson will ultimately sign with Ole Miss. Lewis is committed to Alabama, and the Tide will be tough to beat, but sources still believe there will be a window of opportunity for both Ole Miss and Mississippi State to pull Lewis away from Tuscaloosa before National Signing Day. Linton remains a major Ole Miss target, and sources still expect him to flip to the Rebels sooner rather than later. Adams is leaning to Ole Miss and sources remain adamant that if he's allowed to make his own decision, he'll end up in Oxford.
Ole Miss will bring three quarterbacks --- Gardner Minshew, Brady Davis and Ross Trail --- in over the next few weeks (Minshew and Davis on June 6). At least one source believes Trail and Davis would commit on the spot if an offer were extended. They'll all get long looks.
Ole Miss, which recently landed a commitment from Rivals250 running back Eric Swinney, is likely done at the position. Malik Dear is still on the radar, but he's almost certainly headed elsewhere. The Rebels want to sign two or three wide receivers, per sources, and Lodge, Alex Ofodile (story on his visit to Ole Miss was published Tuesday), Van Jefferson and LaMichael Pettway (who committed to Ole Miss minutes after this nuggets package was posted). Pascagoula, Miss., wide receiver Jalen Smith will also get a look soon. The Rebels are recruiting Dontea Jones, but his commitment to Mississippi State seems solid.
At offensive line, Patterson is Priority One in state. Matt Wommack is very much on the radar. Ole Miss would love to sign Drew Richmond, though it appears Tennessee leads now. The Rebels have a strong chance at Many, La., tackle Garrett Thomas, whose stock has skyrocketed in recent weeks. Nashville's Alex Givens and Milton, Ga., Nick Wilson are also on the Rebels' board. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College lineman Martinas Rankin is also a top target, per sources.
Ole Miss is looking at four Mississippi safety targets --- Ackerman's Jamarcus Bradley, Collins' Mark McLaurin, DeSoto Cortez Sisco and Bay Springs' Jonas Spivey. Gulfport cornerback Richaud Floyd has Ole Miss' attention and could land an offer with a strong camp performance, per sources.
Ole Miss will also be taking long looks at 2016 and 2017 targets over the next few weeks. We'll bring those names and nuggets to you as we get them.
