I'm bedridden and bored, so if you have questions I'll answer them. I woke up yesterday with a bit of a sore throat but still went to the podcast and to the gym. But as the day progressed I knew something was up. Went to the doctor and had a 101.9 fever and 17 white blood count. Strep. Throat. So I'm drugged up and stuck here.
Nuggets are up top, and we'll add to them throughout the day as necessary. Condolences to RaleighRebel on the NC State meltdown last night. That was brutal. I can't imagine losing like that in a regional final. Six-run inning on two hits and the tying run scoring on a passed ball. College kids get rattled at times.
Overall, there were a lot of great games over the weekend. Just as a fan of college baseball, it was awesome. Sure, there were some blowouts yesterday as lower-level teams ran out of pitching, but it's been a competitive tournament so far. Five of seven SEC teams have advanced to super regionals. Ole Miss and Auburn are the other two. Also, no Pac-12 team made super regionals for the first time since the field expanded to 64 teams.
Super Regional pairings and quick thoughts on each
Maryland at Virginia - If Kirby is still out for UVA, you have to like Maryland here, and if you're Arkansas or Missouri State you don't want Shawaryn the first day in Omaha.
Fullerton at Louisville - Louisville is really complete. This might be Dan's best shot so far at a deep run.
VCU at Miami - VCU is a terrific story and has won 14 of its last 15 or something, but the Hurricanes got a great draw here. Not much of a better moment than the Rams dogpiling yesterday though.
TCU at Texas A&M - This should be quality. The Aggies showed a lot of toughness over the weekend. Early thought is TCU finds a way.
ULL at LSU - LSU is going to win, but dang at an environment. Tony Robichaux has done a great job with the Cajuns. They don't have the same talent as 2014, but there are some pieces remaining.
Vanderbilt at Illinois - Illinois is good, but it better be this week. The Illini haven't been tested over a weekend by arms like what is coming this weekend. Vandy's bullpen has to throw strikes, but Illinois just isn't as deep. Also, the media will be insufferable if Illinois wins.
Missouri State at Arkansas - Love Arkansas here, just as I did in the regional.
Florida State at Florida - I get the geography stuff, but can we please spread out the matchups? This should be a really good series, but I'd rather see different pairings.
I saw a picture this morning of a scout at the Auburn-Charleston game checking Twitter. He had been scouting the Cougars' ace for six innings, but then he grabbed his phone and scrolled all the way through the pitcher's Twitter account. It's mentioned often with recruits. Prospects and players need to be careful with how they act on social media. It can cost them.
