Butch Jones has been fired from UT. He consistently had decent recruiting seasons, but just could not get the players to play for him. In addition, there was constant player discipline issues. Jones has success at lower level schools, but just could not be a consistent winner at UT.
Of course the UT HC wish list would not be complete with Jon Gruden. Every time UT has an opening at HC, Gruden is on the list. It will take a lot of money to get Gruden. He is comfortable as an announcer and does not have the stress of college football recruiting, which is basically a year round process. But you can never say never. Many people doubted that Alabama would be able to hire Nick Saban and the next thing you know, he lands in Tuscaloosa and accepts the HC job at Alabama.
Jones had a couple of good seasons at Tennessee, but he never could beat Alabama or Georgia. In addition, he never made an appearance in the SEC Championship Game. Often he and his staff made bad on field decisions and lacked in making game time adjustments. One of the biggest factors is that he and his staff just could not get the players unified as a team.
The Rocky Toppers are not happy with Butch Jones and have been lost since they forced out Philip Fulmer. People have to wonder if Fulmer could have made a come back in his career after a bad season. There is no doubt that he was a good coach and had a good record at UT. Fulmer led UT to several Conference Division Titles, Conference Championships, and a National Championship. Removing Fulmer was a political move that was ironic, since he was instrumental in a political overthrow of Johnny Majors.
UT has the funds and the facilities to attract a big name coach. The question is will the Administration allow the political turmoil to not interfere with the coaching hiring process. There is no doubt that UT will hire someone who is supposedly a good coach, but can this new hire be successful in Rocky Top?
