@Chase Parham and @Neal McCready to follow up on your bye discussion in the pod this morning, while I’d love to have an SEC Championship and a first week bye, If you are a coach, and you know you’ll host at home if you don’t make the SEC Championship game; would you take the guaranteed bye week and sit your starters for last game of the season/during the championship game and get the HOME playoff game. (Playing the same exact amount of games total if you were to win the SEC Championship game)
Or would you risk trying to win the SEC Championship game, playing your starters, with the potential risk of injury and LOSING essentially a meaningless game? To risk having to have played one additional game by participating in the Championship and having to play in the first round of the playoffs? Or risk getting put out of the playoffs.
If it’s me, I’d treat it like NFL organizations do and take the guaranteed bye and try to be third in the SEC or purposely sit starters in the Championship game. I’d also always rather host first game in playoffs than go on the road or straight to a neutral site.
Too much risk going for the Championship game. injury. Having to play one more game than most of the other teams in the playoffs. Likely having to travel for first round in playoff.
