So had my first tough moment last night coaching a team my child is on. I was coaching my son's 6yr old soccer game last night and had a tough moment to deal with. We play 4 vs 4 at that age and split up the full team so yo don't have subs and everyone plays. We were up 2-1 in the 3rd Q, and the other team gets by us and scores. No big deal it happens and at this age still trying to build kids up. So I tell the team hey let's get back on offense and go score and shake it off. My son, at the top of his lungs looks over at me while pointing at his teammate yells "He just let it go pass him, he didn't even do anything". In that moment I immediately tell my son No Sir and tell him to go to the sidelines that he is out of the game. I told the other coach we are gonna play the rest of the quarter man down (3 vs 4) and they say ok. His grandparents did not take that well, and the rest of the parents on the sideline were a bit taken back by it too. Our team ended up scoring the go ahead and winning goal playing man down in the 3rd. At the end of the quarter I went and told my son it was over with and his team needed him in the 4th and I let him come back and play the final quarter. He also apologized to his teammate before he came back in to. This was the first time in coaching my son in any sport that this kind of thing has happened and I have just been wondering the rest of the night and today if I over reacted or not. I know he is reaching the age of getting competitive more but just something about calling out your own teammate like that is something that bothered me and not something I want him to do. Opinions welcome and appreciated, thanks!
