• A pair of rising sophomores at Ole Miss were the most intriguing pitching prospects for the Ripken League team. Six-foot-4, 210-pound righthander Greer Holston started the team’s first game against the Valley League and worked three scoreless innings. Holston has a pronounced wrap in the back of his delivery, but his arm works easily enough, with a high three-quarters slot, and he pitched at 90-91 mph in his first inning of work, then dropped a tick into the 88-90 range. He showed the ability to locate his fastball to both sides, and his 80-82 slider was a solid pitch with good depth. Holston threw 54.2 innings over 17 appearances (eight starts) as a freshman this spring, and his frame and delivery give him a shot to start going forward, though he did not showcase a third pitch on Sunday.

His teammate at Ole Miss and with the Baltimore Redbirds, righty Parker Caracci, has yet to log an inning over his first two years in Oxford, but he’s been a sensation this summer, leading the Ripken League in strikeouts (48 in 38.2 innings) and wins (seven) while ranking second in ERA (0.55) and saves (five). A sturdily built 6-foot, 200-pound righty with a short arm action and a three-quarters slot, Caracci worked at 90-92 in his two-inning stint against the Valley, mixing in a quality big-breaking three-quarters curve at 75-78 and a below-average changeup at 83. But Caracci didn’t have great control in this outing, walking four in one-plus inning, including the first three batters of his second inning of work. Still, he’s clearly turned a corner this summer, and he could become an important bullpen piece for the Rebels in 2018.
