HUCK OFF

You’d assume that, with a Republican Congress, a Republican president and a majority-conservative Supreme Court, America would be getting more conservative. But, the thing is, old ideology doesn’t stand a chance against progressive cultural shifts. This country, no matter how conservatives rig the electoral process, is just, as a matter of fact, getting more liberal.

Case in point: when the Country Music Association appointed Mike Huckabee to their CMA Foundation board last week, there was such an outcry over his anti-gay and pro-NRA stances that, within 24 hours, he had to step down.

That’s saying something – when old-school conservatives can’t even find acceptance within the world of country music. It’s like being told you’re too fat to join Jenny Craig.

Of course, Huckabee – who’s a full-throated shill for the NRA and, as CNN notes, has compared legalizing same-sex marriage to incest and polygamy and opposed same-sex adoption by saying “children are not puppies” – tried that old Christian ploy of painting himself as the oppressed victim. In a post entitled “Hate Wins,” he claims the CMA was “bullied” and hopes “the entertainment industry will become more tolerant and inclusive and recognize that a true love for kids having access to the arts is more important than a dislike for someone or a group of people because of who they are or what they believe.”

Hmm, where was that attitude when you were discriminating against gay adoptive parents?
