First, I’m out of town and I left my computer at home. Those who know me can laugh at this because I have withdrawals if my phone or computer are out of reach for more than 5 minutes. Just a mistake as I loaded a pod just as I was leaving and left it on my desk. Point being, I’m typing from my phone so I doubt this is really lengthy. Thursday will be normal coverage.
Losing a midweek game, on its face, isn’t a big deal. It happens all the time. But this was a dud one. SELA isn’t good and Ole Miss did nothing offensively to press the Lions into issues on the mound and defensively. The top half of the order was awful, and the bunt mess up was the turning point in the game. The offense is pressing and it’s not just affecting contact quality but also working counts. It looks out of sync.
Missing Kevin is just huge. He’s the underrated spark plug and the absence seems to be altering approaches when it shouldn’t. He’s likely out another 4-5 weeks so the guys around him have to chill out. Missing Calvin is a key here as well because that’s two left-handed bats. This depth is being tested early. It’s not panic time but they have to stay in their roles. The last theee games have been really disjointed offensively.
The pitching was fine tonight. It seemed like Mike couldn’t decide whether to burn bullets there late as he was trying to stay in this game but not blow an arm for Thursday.
I don’t have anything official, but I’m told from a source that Kemp is ok. Bruised quad. That’s huge if it’s accurate.
That’s three non-con losses. This team doesn’t need more than two more the rest of the way. Including Governors Cup.
I can paint a picture where things are all good and once healthy Ole Miss is a top team nationally and I can paint a picture of issues everywhere. I’m as interested as I’ve ever been in a team. We don’t know as much about them as I thought we would at this point.
The defense and situational offense have to get better. It’s becoming an identity in a bad way.
Ole Miss is a good team. But the bar is high. This group needs to be a top eight seed. That’s what I’m grading it against.
