I am trying to do some research on a punt that I witnessed made

by an Ole Miss Punter, during the October 16, 1976 football game played between South Carolina and Ole Miss at Williams-Brice Stadium (WB). It has become my QUEST to actually read an article that describes the details of the punt accurately. I saw the punt and it was by far a punt of a life time. The 2nd best punt I have ever seen would not come close to this punt in terms of both height and length. The play by play announcer for the Gamecocks, Bob Fulton, has long passed away. So therefore, I obviously can't get any information there. I am trying to get in touch with the radio color guy for South Carolina but have not yet been able to get his e-mail address or phone number. My brother-in-law who attended the game with me has also passed away. I have researched a couple of newspapers to no avail. After all of these years I have been unable to find anyone (although I am sure there are some fans around) that actually remember the punt. I am going to take some time and just go to Columbia and see if I can find anything about the punt in the paper. Again, I want to read something that really describes the punt.

Below are the details I actually remember:

In 1976, I witnessed the punt of all punts in WB when USC was playing Ole Miss. Jimmy Miller, a barefooted punter for the Rebels, punted the ball higher and longer than I had ever seen before or since. The punt was just not long but it was incredibily high. The line of scrimmage was the Ole Miss 18 yard line, when Miller punted the ball it was seemingly as high as the lights are at WB. In 1976 of course, there was no East Upper, only the West Upper but it appeared the ball was as high as the lights in the West Upper Deck. The ball hit somewhere in the North End zone and bounced out of the end zone.

I have seen punts as long as that punt but after watching a life time of football since then I have never seen a punt as high and as long as that one punt in 1976.

Below is a write up I found on wikepedia, the article says the game was played in 1977 but I know it was played in 1976 because I looked up some Ole Miss records and it showed the 1977 Ole Miss / USC game being played in Oxford, Miss.

"Miller attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where he played for the Ole Miss Rebels football team from 1976 to 1977. He was a barefoot punter. He led the NCAA in punting average in 1977. He was inducted into the Ole Miss Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.[1] Miller set a school record when he kicked a punt for 82 yards against South Carolina in 1977".

Again, the line of scrimmage was the Ole Miss 18 yard line. I can still see our punt returner backing up frantically shortly after the ball left Miller's foot. He backed up for a while and then saw that it was no use to even try and field the punt. Now, to be honest I can't remember where the ball hit in the end zone but I know it didn't go out of bounds before it hit the end zone because it couldn't have went out of bounds and still been an 82 yard punt. I'm thinking it hit into the end zone and rolled out at the back of the end zone, which if the line of scrimmage had been on the 8 yard line, the punt would have covered 92 yards.

Jim Carlen, the Head Football Coach for the Gamecocks at the time, said on his show the next day, the punt made by Miller was the most incredible punt he had ever seen in his entire career as a player and a coach.

Now, this is where I need the Ole Miss fans help. Is there any publication, newspaper or whatever that any of you can find that details the actual punt? I would love to show it to my friends and long time Gamecock fans, instead of just having to tell them about it and remember the details from 1976. I will check back on this board from time to time to see if anyone can find anything that would help me.

Thanks in advance.

Try Rick Cleveland at the Mississippi Sports hall of Fame:
rcleveland@msfame.com
He's the director (as well as an award winning sportswriter and author) and has pretty much seen it all in Mississppi sports over the last several decades.Be sure to visit the Hall when you are in Mississippi (Jackson) for an unforgettable experience.
You might also try the Sports Information Director's office at Ole Miss. Perhaps one of those resources could put you in touch with Langston Rogers (former S I D) who probably eyewitnessed it.Good luck.
By the way, Williams -Brice is the second loudest college stadium I can recall watching a game in (second only to Tiger Stadium at LSU.That night in 2009 it may have been louder. And yes,as advertised, the structure was physically rocking)

contact UMAA, they used to keep game films back then that were available to the fans after some time passed after the games.

Interesting topic, so I did some Google work. You may have already seen this, but in the event you did not, I found a document which has a brief write-up and stats of all the games (it was in 1976). It does mention the 82 yard punt and states that Miller was a freshman. You can see the game summary and stats here.

The write-up mentions that the South Carolina QB was Ron Bass. This was the same Ron Bass known by the nickname "Sunshine" in the movie "Remember The Titans" several years ago.

Miller could kick the hell out of the ball. We would go to games early just to watch him kick during warmups. Would love to have seen this particular 82-yarder mentioned in the write-up. I was fortunate enough to be in attendance in 1984 when Bill Smith kicked a 92-yarder vs USM in Jackson. The goal line was the only thing that kept it from being longer. That thing rolled thru the end zone and up against the back wall of that stadium. He also had a 77-yarder later in the game.

Thanks, no I had not seen the above article. I did find a couple of small write ups but neither mentioned the 82 yarder.

Ole Miss fans, thanks for the information above. I will try those sources. BTW, I have found Mr. Miller's e-mail address at the school he currently teaches and coaches and wrote him a e-mail. It would be cool to get a reply back from him, if I do, I will share it with you guys.

The reason I am so obsessed by the punt is again because of the height and lenght of the punt. It's like seeing an unassisted triple play in MLB, they only happen every 3 or 4 decades.

On a different subject, there is a section across the street from Williams-Brice stadium now called Gamecock Park. It is located where the old Famer's Market use to be. It has only been in existence for a couple of years. The reason I mention this is because it was patterned after the Grove. They have a lot of nice tress planted there but it of course will be a few years before they get very big.

I hope to visit Ole Miss for a game someday, maybe the next time South Carolina plays in Oxford I will be able to make the game.

Since you are investigating Jim, here is some trivia which you may find interesting. When I did the Google research which resulted in my post above, I found a 2009 article which said he was dead. The writer apparently covers U Conn sports and said he had met Jim. He said Jim had been in a motorcycle accident, lost a leg, and had fallen on hard times. The article said Jim died in Aug 2009. You can read the article here. Apparently someone had been impersonating Jim in Connecticut. Someone posted a comment at bottom of article in January 2011 that said Jim was alive and well, living in Ripley, and had not been in a motorcycle accident.

If you decide to write about Jim, there seems to be a lot of fascinating material available!

I think this thread is awesome for 1 reason...

Not a single response addresses the weirdness of this post to begin with...

Freddie.B.Cocky...I strongly recommend some sort of professional help.

Sorry for the tough love dude...I was hesitant to even say anything but...what was most worrisome to me was not really your long winded narrative describing your quest for information...but it was the fact you "edited" 3 times over a 2 hour period.

It is funny though how not one Ole Miss fan felt your post was odd...they lovvvvvvvvvvvvve talking about themselves and lose all self awareness when doing so.

I remember once...watching Ole Miss vs. Auburn. Forgot the Ole Miss player's name but...damn did he hit a fly ball to center field...to this day I have not seen a fly ball go so high up in the air...

If I am not mistaken...I believe the game was played April 1, 1997. Does anybody know the email address or even better the home phone number of the radio commentators of that game?

You can read about the fly ball with the help of Google. Seems the ball carried far enough to clear the center field fence and actually hit an unsuspecting fan in the head. The victim was an 18 year old MSU homosexual baseball groupie named Panda. Apparently the injury pickled Panda's brain and he has been living in his mom's basement with his boyfriend "Bully" since the day of his injury. Now all he does is post obsessively on the internet under the name "PickledPanda" , take care of his special friend Bully and wait on his monthly crazy check.

Hope this helps.

I think PP's post is awesome for 1 reason…

It shows that he is not only an idiot but also a complete jack@ss.

Not a single post could match this one in showing what a complete jack@ss the poster is.

PP…I strongly recommend that you get some professional help to get you to stop obsessing over Ole Miss message board posts.

You seem to be into tough love…which isn't surprising based on your posts and the picture associated with your id…but what is worrisome is that your post is so long winded and you attempt to bash someone else for being long winded…and also that you had to edit a one word post which followed your long winded post.

It's funny how you find yourself qualified to criticize Ole Miss fans as odd…especially given how odd you apparently are. It is absolutely hilarious that you talk about anyone losing self awareness. Actually that is beyond hilarious.

I remember once…on an Ole Miss message board…forget the poster's name…but he seemed to be a complete jack@ss idiot who wanted to look for flaws in everyone but himself.

If I am not mistaken…I believe the post was in this thread and was posted on 1/22/2015 by someone whose thoughts seem to be pickled. Does anybody know why such a jack@ss would be so interested in posting such stupidity on this board?

Panda's incoherent diatribe suggests that he too is participating in the 365-day sleep deprivation program.

The Panda and Bully have been using that pickle over and over again. I hear he is the reason Bully likes leg humpin' so much. Nasty, Panda, nasty, but hey, it is a free country. Just one favor for the love of humanity, if there is any possibility of procreation, just don't. The world is better off with only one of you.

Sorry, but the reason I edited my post is because sometimes I do it for clarification. Not so much for any other reason but I just want my readers to understand what I am trying to say to them.

I found this on Wikipedia that said James Miller is currently teaching at a Middle School in Ripley, MS. I found the website for the Middle School and it lists James Miller as a teacher and coach. I have written him a couple of e-mails but got no response. I just recently wrote a letter to the school addressed to Mr. Miller.

It is possible the type of e-mail he had at the school is not supported by my browser, I'm not sure but anyway I hope he gets the hard copy of the letter I sent, which I included my e-mail address, and maybe I will get some type of response from Mr. Miller.

Again, if I get a reply I will share it with you guys.
