Kiffin:
— Great energy, really coming together, really good culture for so many new guys. Easy to have culture until adversity hits. Excited where time is. Pieces coming together on defense, have eliminated explosive plays, which has been an issue in the past. Feels really good about competition at a number of spots — offensive line, more running backs, tight ends are deep and receivers. Really good all around.
— QBs are doing really good. Weis spending a ton of time with them. Lot of pressure on that position in this system. All have done well. Spencer Sanders is healthy now and has done some really good things, especially in scrimmage situations.
— Oregon State runs a lot of what Ole Miss used to run so Ole Miss knew what it was getting with Jam Griffin. Kiffin thinks this offense, with the tempo, is actually easier to learn because there’s less terminology to learn.
— Garrison is excellent OL coach. Had worked with him before and tried multiple times to get him to Ole Miss. Excited about improvement. Will see some different names playing on Saturday as a result of that.
— Mental health awareness has been really good. Guys don’t just have to shut up and play football. It wasn’t about winning games; it was about helping them with life.
— Said he doesn’t really know yet who the starting quarterback is. Both guys have done good things, both guys have played a lot. It’s challenging. It’s an awesome situation to have. It makes them better, makes team better.
— Tight end room has been an issue in the past. Now there’s quality competition, 4-5 guys in there doing things. Refreshing. (Was asked specifically about Wolfe, but gave a general answer).
— New special teams coach has come in and done a really good job. Do lots of drill work in practice, so it’s hard to see it coming together in practice but he’s excited about it.
— Said he had never met Michael Oher until the other day when he dropped by. In middle of training camp so he’s not up to speed on everything. Said lots of times what is being written and said is far from the truth.
— Next week getting into in-season practice mode.
— Can only keep one quarterback happy. Don’t do things a certain way just because they’ve been done before. Will be open to doing whatever they have to do, including repping up to three quarterbacks.
