I talked to Michael Trigg Sr., who is the father, you may have guessed, of USC transfer portal TE Michael Trigg Jr. To say he is high on the idea of his son transferring to Ole Miss is an understatement. However, he is not the one making the decision and he was quick to say as much. He loves the way Lane Kiffin has used tight ends in the past and he really likes the way Kiffin's offense moves people around and takes advantage of talent.
"Mike (his son) want to win the Mackey Award," referring to the award given to the nation's top tight end each year. Lane does very good stuff with the tight end. If he has special talent, he's going to take advantage of it."
Trigg referred to Kiffin's success with tight ends at USC and Alabama and he was quite impressed with what Kiffin got from his FAU tight end, Harrison Bryant, back in 2019. Bryant won the Mackey Award and is now with the Cleveland Browns, who defeated the NFC North champion Cincinnati Bengals Sunday but failed to make the playoffs and will watch the Bengals beat the Raiders Sunday.
He also really likes John David Baker. He also is hoping his son can find his new home in time for the spring.
"It would be a great fit," Trigg said. "He needs to be there in the spring. He can learn the playbook and all of that and then in the fall, he can kill."
Trigg reiterated he won't make his son's decision, but he admitted, "If I have my say so, that's where I'd have him go."
Trigg applied to get into the portal over the weekend and 48 hours must pass before a player is officially in the portal. If he can get into the portal officially tomorrow, the plan is to visit on Thursday. Otherwise, the visit will take place later in the weekend.
Per a source, Ole Miss is planning to bring Trigg and Dart, former teammates at USC and good friends, to Oxford together. Dart has other options but it's looking more and more like he's at least intrigued at the idea of playing in the SEC.
As for Kiffin, I talked to a good friend of mine, Eric Perkins, who was a long-time, award-winning sports broadcaster at KARE in Minneapolis. Perkins is pretty connected in the Twin Cities' sports scene and he's connected to a large degree with the Vikings. As of today, he'd not heard Kiffin's name connected with the Vikings other than the rumor mill. He knew the Vikings were talking to Doug Pederson, Byron Leftwich, Brian Flores, Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett and several others. He said the Vikings were conducting the search themselves without a search firm, were casting a wide net, wanted to go younger and wanted to hire an offensive mind. He said he expected the Vikings would also search for a minority candidate far beyond just meeting the Rooney Rule requirements.
Like I said earlier today, the Kiffin rumor has been out there for five days, so I'm not dismissing it outright, and it was mentioned on the Dan LeBatard Show as well. Still, I can't find traction on it. None at all.
