And give all other conference champs, including G5 conference champs, automatic bids and first round byes if they don’t make the top 12 playoff. That would help keep emphasis on regular season standings and championships.
If a G5 wins it, great. If 13th ranked Oklahoma wins, so be it because Tulane, Liberty, Boise state, and whoever else had their chance in a playoff.
These same bowls would get way more attention, it’s no longer a meaningless game. Survive and advance.
And a brand new NIT-like championship game in an nfl stadium that could be big.
