I know what I am about to say isn't always the case. That said, let's look at this young man's recruiting attributes.
Patterson was a 4* with a 5.9RR. That translates into a near blue chip prospect. He was in the Rivals 100 at 74. I realize that this isn't a tell all simply because there are kids with similar attributes that don't bloom in their first 2 - 3 years if ever.
I look at a kid's offer sheet to find out what other (elite) Head Coaches think of him. Patterson listed offers from AL, AU, LSU, Schtate, TN and of course us.. That's an impressive list.
While I am not saying this applies across the board, Patterson came in with the credentials to compete his true Freshman year. Apparently, he put the work in over the summer to become stronger, faster and someone with an above average understanding of the playbook.
I know CHF isn't omniscient, but he does work very hard and we get our share of kids with offers from elite program such as Alabama. In fact, CHF is recruiting this type of player more than any HC we had since recruiting became so public. He also seems to recruit kids with good character and not thugs or problem children. (I know Kelly can be argued as an exception to that.) While not every such kid will play his true Freshman year, I'll take them virtually every time in positions of need. I really look forward to seeing him and Sims get some OL reps.
This may seem pie in the sky, but I just feel so damn good about having him and hearing he is running a lot with the 1s, I had to post. BTW Chase, nice article on Sims.
In closing, what other true Freshmen do other poster see as vying for significant playing time?
Also, does anyone know the nature of Howard's football health?
