Here's what happened from my side.
As Neal said, we met with the Grove Collective folks, including Walker, last week and agreed to have him on the show this past Tuesday for an episode to run Wednesday. On Monday, he said the university said to hold off on posting media until after the press conference. He asked me if I still wanted to prerecord to run Friday or if I wanted to wait. I told him that as long as everyone was embargoed, I wanted to wait because it made more sense to be sure of what was said in the PC and talk about that. He assured me no one would post before Friday. Fast forward to yesterday, when the Spirit posted the interview Walker did with Zach Berry. Walker was under the impression that it was running Friday. He didn't know Zach and Ben jumped the gun until it was already published. It wasn't supposed to be, and that's what ignited this entire issue.
My lone frustration with Walker and The Grove Collective, and I've told him this, so I'm not speaking out of turn, is that they didn't tell the Spirit to take it down once it happened. Instead they got to post the interview and then just shrug it off as no big deal. Walker also had an interview scheduled with Ben, which makes me skeptical that it was all an error. If Zach was interviewing him and waiting to run it Friday, why did Ben need to interview him too and run it back to back in the same channel? It would be like Neal interviewing him for a show and me doing it 30 minutes later. However, Walker didn't conspire to screw us, and I don't think you should take this as a confidence hit if you're planning to give to The Grove Collective.
This is a deeper issue on a number of fronts, and we will do as we need to do for the site and our network. This is a complex thing on a number of levels. Neal has pointed many of those out, and I'm not going to regurgitate them here. Walker should have asked them to take it down. I do believe that. But beyond that he wasn't at fault here. He wasn't trying to screw us. He thought everyone was on the same page. The Spirit screwed him and affected public opinion.
