OT: Charleston SC

I am going to a wedding in October on the Isle of Palms. My wife and I are debating staying in Charleston or on the island. We will be there away from the wedding group mostly, except for the wedding day. Does anybody have any thoughts on staying at either place? We will probably use VRBO, so if there is an area of Charleston that would be better for shopping, dinning, and bars, please give me some recommendations.
