Midas:
Drove in to Midas today on North Gloster for:
Oil Change
Replace bulb in break light
Get price on two tires
and the starter was going out, they want $90 diagnostic fee, I say never mind (I didn't know it was starter but knew damn well any mechanic would turn the key and no the problem)

Oil Change and bulb $40 as expected
Price quoted on tires 492.96 ( I thought holy shat but then realized they quoted all four instead of two so really pretty good)
though they tried to tack on $90 for Warranty and another $90 for alignment (passed)
They say I need a new starter price plus labor $466.98 + tax.
Uh no

So I go to leave, and of course, though I drove it in, now it will not start
I google starters for my truck and see average replacement with labor is $280-320.
I go back in and say, I want ya'll to fix the starter but what can we do on the price. I show them the average cost plus internet quotes from two other places just down the road.
Guy plays on his computer asks if I'd be okay with refurbed starter and quotes me $412.
I tell him it's here and it won't start so I'm willing to pay a premium for the convenience but that is still way to high.
I call Express(1/4 mile away) and get a quote for $319, and the guys says yeah I can have it done 1-1.5 hours really not much of a job.
I asked if I walk down to Autozone and by the part what will they put it in for. He says they have to charge time and a half for parts that aren't from them (they were already charging $137.99 labor, keep in mind Express just told me "it isn't much of a job") so we are talking over $200 for labor.
I ask Midas if he really wants me to drive in to his place and then have my vehicle towed from his parking lot to his competitor 1/4 mile down the road? spoiler that's what happened
He tries to tell me by the time I pay $100 for a tow truck etc. it will cost me the same. I tell him the tow truck will be $60-75tops, and I will do it strictly off of principle.

I call the tow truck (first one I called) and within 30 minutes and $75 later he has my truck at Express.

Express:
Fixes in about an hour.
Express ends up charging me $308 taxes and all (better than the $319) they quoted me.
Oh yeah labor was about $69 (nice) or about half what Midas wanted to charge even before they were going to go time and a half on a part that wasn't theirs.

So I paid $383 for a new part plus a tow and saved $117 (including taxes) from the new part price Midas quoted me and about $30 from the refurbed price they quoted me

Moral of the story, even if you don't know shit (like me with mechanics) Google/DuckDuckGo that shit, and Midas is tryin' rape people out here

P.S. no one at Midas mentioned or offered to tap on the starter with a hammer and save me the $75 tow, basturds
