BIG-12 Attendance Figures
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Current seating capacities in PAC-12 stadiums, ranked 1-12:
1) UCLA (The Rose Bowl): 88,565
2) USC (L.A. Memorial Coliseum): 77,500
3) Washington (Husky Stadium): 70,138
4) California (California Memorial Stadium): 62,467
5) Oregon (Autzen Stadium): 54,000
6) Arizona State (Sun Devil Stadium): 53,599
7) Utah (Rice-Eccles Stadium): 51,444
8) Arizona (Arizona Stadium): 50,782
9) Stanford (Stanford Stadium): 50,424
10) Colorado (Folsom Field): 50,183
11) Oregon State (Reser Stadium): 43,363
12) Washington State (Gesa Field): 32,952
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Next, we'll rank the PAC-12 teams based on number of reported sellouts. These numbers are derived from reported attendance figures. These numbers obviously do not include games that will be played this weekend.
1) Utah: 5
2) Arizona State: 1
3) Arizona: 0
4) California: 0**
5) Colorado: 0
6) Oregon: 0**
7) Oregon State: 0**
8) Stanford: 0**
9) UCLA: 0**
10) USC: 0**
11) Washington: 0**
12) Washington State: 0**
A few notes:
*Well this is surprising. I'm not surprised to see the vast majority of PAC-12 schools not report a single sellout, but I am surprised that the one that consistently did it was Utah.
*You're going to see a theme develop: the states that make up the west coast (California, Oregon, and Washington) vs. the states that do not (Arizona, Utah, and Colorado.) These groups of states had very different requirements when it came to attending football games (out of COVID precaution.)
*You'll notice asterisks beside several of these teams. They're there specifically because of COVID restrictions on fan attendance. Did they make a difference? Would UCLA have sold out their stadium without COVID restrictions? Well.... maybe? Probably not? We'll never know. You're going to see that some schools (like Oregon) did much better with ticket sales (or reported attendance) than other schools. Perhaps other variables are also needed to explain these rankings.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now we'll rank the PAC-12 teams based on attendance numbers SO FAR. There are still several games yet to be played this weekend. I can edit this post once those final figures roll in.
Rankings are based on PERCENTAGE OF STADIUM FILLED, not raw numbers.
Rankings are based on REPORTED ATTENDANCE FIGURES, because obviously, that's all we have to go on.
My work is shown underneath each team, ordering home games in descending order from most attended to least attended.
1) Utah
Rice-Eccles Stadium: 51,444
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 51,873 (100.8%)
Oregon: 52,724 (102.5%)
UCLA: 51,922 (100.9%)
Arizona State: 51,724 (100.5%)
Weber State: 51,511 (100.1%)
Washington State: 51,483 (100.1%)
Colorado: ?
Note: As you can see, Utah reported a sellout for every game this year. Utah also had no COVID restrictions. Is that why they had a sellout every game? Did the fact they also had a good team play a role? Maybe it's both.
2) Colorado
Folsom Field: 50,183
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 46,484 (92.6%)
Arizona: 49,806 (99.2%)
USC: 48,197 (96.0%)
Oregon State: 47,984 (95.6%)
Minnesota: 47,482 (94.5%)
Northern Colorado: 44,153 (88.0%)
Washington: 41,284 (82.3%)
Note: Colorado did NOT have a good team this year. They weren't awful, like some other teams on this list, but they weren't great, either. Colorado ALSO did not have COVID restrictions on games. Does this mean that COVID restrictions were a predictor on which schools did the best on reported attendance? Perhaps. Then again, look who's #3.
3) Oregon**
Autzen Stadium: 54,000
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 48,311 (89.5%)
Washington State: 52,327 (96.9%)
Colorado: 51,449 (95.3%)
Arizona: 50,024 (92.6%)
California: 50,008 (92.6%)
Fresno State: 43,276 (80.1%)
Stony Brook: 42,782 (79.2%)
Oregon State: ?
NOTE: Proof of vaccination or negative COVID test required for all attendees // Face masks required at all times for fans aged 5 and over // Oregon had strict COVID measures, as did every state along the west coast, yet they had a better reported attendance rate than Ole Miss. Did it make a difference that Oregon had a great team this year? Was that enough to drive up reported attendance despite the COVID restrictions?
4) Arizona State

Utah: 32,008 (63.0%)
Washington: 30,880 (60.8%)

NOTE: Way down the list, we find Arizona. Once again, this state had zero COVID restrictions on football fans this year, yet they had a pretty bad attendance rate. Does it matter that Arizona sucked this year? Probably. Are they an exception in being so low, sort of like Oregon is an exception in being so high on this list? Maybe.
11) California**
