I know, I know....... every position coach deserves to be fired..... So we're going to prove it. Let's look at each position group and see which players have, and have not, developed.
I got interested so here's a little research. Do what you will with it. I'll leave out QB, because we know Werner is a good QB coach and has actually proven to be a good play caller lately. He isn't going anywhere. I figured I'd look at other position coaches who have had their heads called for and others that interest me.
I want to look at the coaches in question - OL, DL, LB, DB, RB
OL
2012- Darone Bailey, Pierce Burton, Ben Still, Robert Conyers
2013- Laremy Tunsil, Daronte Bouldin, Davion Johnson, Austin Golson
2014- Rod Taylor, Fahn Cooper, Sean Rawlings, Jordan Sims, Tyler Putman,
2015- Javon Patterson, Michael Howard, Alex Givens
Assessment -
Hit Rate - 56%
-- 9 out of 16 are stars or solid contributors.
-- The ELITE players have all panned out and even improved after they got here.
-- The JUCOs(Burton/Cooper) have both been very good and developed through their 2nd season.
-- 3*'s that have developed include Conyers, Rawlings, and Sims. Alex Givens has been hyped behind the scenes. Ben Still has been serviceable. He was never projected to be any more than that.
-- Busts have largely been determined by injury or transfer. Bailey, Davion Johnson, Tyler Putman, Golson.
-- Daronte Bouldin is seriously the only legitimate bust by the staff in regards to recruiting and development.
-- I think Matt Luke has really been hit hard with some weird issues in his tenure... suspensions, injuries, etc.
Recruiting needs to be much better on the O-line in regards to depth. We need to be taking more bodies every single year. Screw the, "we're only taking 1 OT because we don't want to scare him off" BS...
-- I think Matt Luke will be here next year.
DL
2012- Channing Ward, Isaac Gross, John Youngblood
2013- Robert Nkemdiche, Lavon Hooks, Herbert Moore
2014- Marquis Haynes, Breeland Speaks, Gerrald McDowell, Victor Evans, Chris Williams(no show)
2015- DJ Jones, Ross Donelly, Austrian Robinson, Rasool Clemons(no show), Joe Anderson(no show)
Assessment -
Hit Rate - 76%
-- 10 out of 13 have been immediate hits. Several stars, lots of key contributors. Visible talent and development out of this group. I didn't factor in the no shows.
-- The ELITE players have panned out for the most part. I don't pin Channing Ward on the staff for personal reasons.
-- The JUCOs(Hooks/Jones) have been very solid in their time here.
-- Gross and Youngblood and Haynes have all been Kiffin products. Great coaching jobs there.
-- There is talent to work with on Victor Evans and Ross Donelly. We'll see what happens with Big Herb and McDowell. Wait and see on Robinson too considering we don't know his true position.
-- Person Note: I feel like Scheme has reallly hurt our D-lines production. We've all seen what they can do talent wise. It needs to be put to better use. That's why I wanted to look at this group. No one is calling for Kiffin's head.
LB
2012- Tamario Strong
2013- Ray Ray Smith, Marcus Robinson(no show)
2014- Demarquis Gates, AJ Moore(moved to husky), Christian Russell
2015- Terry Caldwell, Shawn Curtis, Zedrick Woods(also moved to husky)
Assessment -
Hit Rate - 33%
-- 1 out of 6 has panned out. No clue what happened to Christian Russell but i had to say he didn't pan out because he isn't playing this year. Like at all... weird.
-- RECRUITING, RECRUITING, RECRUITING, RECRU.......... ok you get the point.
This is abysmal. 1.) we need to hire a legitimate LB coach. and 2.)RECRUIT THE HELL OUT OF SOME LINEBACKERS. Take guys like Mique Juarez and Ben Davis. Anybody that is an elite LB and promise them they start from DAY 1. Teach them as they go. They'll develop with the other elite freshmen we can bring in. Baptism by fire baby, cause it's better than what we've got now!
-- Seriously...... we need a LB coach.
2012- Mike Hilton, Trae Elston, Dehendret Collins, Anthony Standifer
2013- Tony Conner, Nick Brassel(vomit), Bobby Hill, David Kamara
2014- Ken Webster, CJ Hampton, Tee Shepard, CJ and AJ Moore
2015- Tony Bridges, Cam Ordway, Montrell Custis, Jalen Julius, Armani Linton
Assessment -
-- HOLY CRAP We haven't recruited any safeties...........
-- That first class was really well developed. Hilton and Elston are stars and Collins contributed. Standifer busted.
-- VOMIT at the 2013 group...... Thank God for Tony Conner
-- Ken Webster was actually a very lowly ranked 3*. Good development with him so far. CJ Hampton has shown flashes. Needs more playing time and coaching. The Moore twins are great athletes but they may just be limited talent wise. Love their attitude and love having them on the team though.
-- Ordway looks like he has the makings of being really good and he was just a 3*
-- Overall we need to recruit better back here.
-- Jason Jones may or may not be the answer here. I like his resume. He's proven to be good everywhere he has coached. But we have to recruit better here.
These last 2 position groups(LB and DB) have proven why our defense has been ATROCIOUS at times this year.
RB
2012- Jaylen Walton, I'Tavius Mathers, Kenno Loyal(no show)
2013- Jordan Wilkins, Mark Dodson, Eugene Brazley, Kailo Moore(moved to CB)
2014- Akeem Judd, DK Buford
2015- Eric Swinney
Assessment -
This one interested me the most....... our O-line has really struggled at times to open holes for these guys. We've seen what some can do in the open field when given space.
-- Walton is all on Nix. He's done a great job developing his vision, burst, moves, and blocking. Like they said on the podcast, couldn't ask for more.
-- Mathers and Dodson didn't just forget how to run.... I think poor development played a role in their transfers.
-- Wilkins, Judd, and Brazley have shown flashes of what they can do when they get holes to run through.
-- I think the biggest issue here is that we haven't recruited a complete back.... so we have too many. No reason to recruit 4 RB's in one year.
-- We'll see who replaces Walton. That'll be the true test of development. I like Nix, especially as a MS Recruiter.
So there you have it....... my late night, exceptionally long, breakdown of the position groups people have questioned most over the season. And 2 that I wanted to look at.... Lol.
Hope it wasn't too long. Take this info and run with it. I took the time to look all this shit up so I figured, why not share it.
Hotty Toddy folks.
