It's a freaking picture of PLUTO!!!!!!
So proud to be an American today. Nine years ago NASA launched the New Horizons spacecraft to Pluto. It was the fastest craft ever created by humans, going up to 45,000mph. Even with our most powerful telescope, Hubble, the previous best image we had of Pluto was just a tiny blob.
Just a few hours ago, after traveling 3 billion miles to get there, New Horizons just flew past Pluto and her moon Charon. So. Freaking. Awesome. NASA scientists are amazing. Pluto is smaller than half the size of the United States. So to bulls-eye a target that small from 3 billion miles away is astonishing. Oh, equally awesome is the fact that the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh, the man who discovered Pluto, are on the spacecraft! Oh, and Pluto has a heart!
