In my opinion, the field was not quite as deep when Nicklaus played because the equipment was so damn less forgiving than what it is now. You can get away with a LOT more now in comparison to when Nicklaus played. For gosh sakes, pick up a blade from the '60s and then pick up a ball (which is a whole other discussion) and if you are off one hair, it's going to be really, really ugly.

Tiger Woods goes around yesterday at the Masters and I don't think he hit a fairway until 15. Woods was in the top 20. Putting is a lot bigger part of the game now due to the speed of the greens, but the current game and the depth of the field is not separated nearly as much by ball striking as it used to be.

And if you really want to think about it, give Ben Hogan some of the new equipment. That would have been a total joke. 4thqtr
