There is always so much more to the football player under the helmet.
There is so much we don't know about the players we watch on Saturdays.
We're quick to point fingers while we sit in the stands, casting judgement while we sit there and enjoy our hot dog and Coke.

Case in point is Bama center Seth McLaughlin, who has been receiving criticism and personal digs after he had a number of poor snaps in the national
championship game (including the final play of the game when Jalen Milroe was stopped short of the goal line).

Numerous reports (including The Tuscaloosa News) now have McLaughlin transferring- his many poor snaps throughout the season may or may not be the reason for his decision to move on (he did not meet with reporters after the Michigan game).

I thought I'd offer up the other side of Seth McLaughlin, the lineman most of us know only by what he does on the football field.

Seth McLaughlin is from Buford, Georgia- he was the nation's tenth-rated center coming out of high school.
McLaughlin started 8 games for Bama in 2022 and every game this season.

McLaughlin had the highest grade among Bama linemen in the Texas game earlier this season.
He did not miss an assignment in the Miss State game.
He did not allow a quarterback pressure or a sack in the Auburn game.

Seth McLaughlin is an accomplished student.
The senior has earned his UA undergrad degree in finance and he has a Master's degree from Bama in hospitality management.

McLaughlin was a semi-finalist for the William V. Campbell Tropy For Academics, and he has a giving heart as well:
He used the NIL money he earned by selling T-shirts and donated the money to the Food Bank Of West Alabama.

How highly is Seth McLaughlin coveted?
According to writer Tony Tsoukalas, the center is visiting Ohio State and Ole Miss week.
McLaughlin also has coaches from other schools after him including Oklahoma, Clemson, Penn State, Texas A&M and Southern Cal.

You have to be really good to draw interest from those football powers.
You have to be an amazing, smart and gifted young man to succeed athletically and academically at such a high level.

Did Seth McLaughlin see some rough patches this past season?
Absolutely.

Does he deserve some fans calling him fat and lazy on social media?
Absolutely not.

There is always so much more to the football player under the helmet.

How about we compliment Seth McLaughlin for his hard work as a UA student athlete and wish him luck in the future?

That sure would flip the script.

That sure would be the right thing to do.
