File all of this in the "informed rumor" category. I obviously didn't see the scrimmage and I haven't talked to anyone who was there. So yep, this is third-hand, but it comes from normally reliable sources. Still, I'll keep it very vague.
What I heard:
-- Of the quarterbacks, Chad Kelly was the one who didn't turn it over. I was told he had a pretty solid day and seemed very engaged from the beginning. Ryan Buchanan was solid as well. I didn't hear much about DeVante Kincade. Jason Pellerin impressed, I was told, especially near the goal line.
-- No numbers or anything, but I heard Jordan Wilkins had a good day, as did Akeem Judd. The running game was improved, especially compared to this time last year, per sources. Again, no specifics, just generalities.
-- Javon Patterson earned rave reviews, which jives with what coaches have said. He's got a bright future if he can stay healthy.
-- Robert Conyers impressed at center. That seems to be a theme of sorts this month as well.
-- The feeling is C.J. Johnson is going to be serviceable, at the worst, at linebacker. One observer said he can be at least as proficient as Mike Marry and D.T. Shackelford. If so, given Ole Miss' strength up front, that might be enough. Of course there's a chance Johnson could be stellar at linebacker. I'm just passing along what I was told.
That's really all I feel comfortable sharing. Again, I'm not reporting any of this. I wasn't there. That's just stuff I was told.
I suspect I'll get lit up like a Christmas tree now.
Peace.
