The former Ole Miss pitcher lost his mom after an extended fight against breast cancer. She and I traded a lot of emails over the course of his career, and while she couldn't travel much at all due to the illness, she consumed every bit of information about Ole Miss baseball she could find.
Mostly against doctor's orders, she drove to Oxford to see him and hug him the day the team got back from Omaha in 2014. She had told me she was making the trip and just wanted to see his face when he got to Swayze. It was a really cool thing.
I text him this morning, and he told me her passing was a blessing because she had suffered so much. So send a prayer if that's your thing. She was one of the nicest parents I've met since I started my career. And Sam is a great guy.
