The correct info directly from Ball's mouth is that Pastner wanted Crawford to transfer from Memphis to Georgia Tech. Pastner asked his joined at the hip bud, Ball, to see what he could do to help him get Crawford to pull the trigger for GT. Ball knew Crawford from Pastner's and his days at Memphis. Ball spoke with Crawford and sent him a pair of tennis shoes and a small gift card. Ball says he bought Crawford and his brother airline tickets to visit him in Arizona. However, before taking the trip last February Crawford announced for Ole Miss. Ball had to eat the money for the airline tickets.
Assuming Crawford did accept the shoes and small gift card from Ball while at Memphis, he violated NCAA rules. However, in the past when similar infractions have occurred the NCAA ruling has required restitution and perhaps suspension for a game or two. Inasmuch as Crawford did not transfer to the school that provided the impermissable benefits, his suspension likely will be no more than one game, if any. The problem will be getting the NCAA to rule on this matter as soon as possible. Crawford will be on the floor soon if not in the first game.
