I have seen several post about the pistol formation and other suggestions for improving the run game. Dylan even has a post where he says a crease opened, but Judd wasn't quick enough to get to it before the hole closed.
The solution to the run game is for Chad to go under center. If the running back starts toward the hole when the ball is snapped, they are running full speed before they get the ball. The ball is then handed at the line and they can hit the hole quicker. I talked to a former All-American at DT and he said it is nearly impossible to engage a lineman, get off a block, and make a tackle if the back is in the 4.4 range. The back hits the hole too quick.
However, if we are in the shotgun, the ball has to travel to Chad, he has to hand off, the back has to then begin running. This obviously takes much more time. If you look a teams that run between the tackles well, the normally run some sets from under center. This doesn't mean we have to all the time, but currently, when we go under center, we can all probably call the play that's coming.
I would love to see some stats on rushing yards for teams in the shotgun vs. teams under center.
