1) Last night was “a movie” as the kids would say. That’s the best basketball atmosphere I’ve ever experienced as an Ole Miss fan. Section 106 was hoppin’ all night! Can’t wait to be back Saturday. That place is going to be an absolute zoo!
2) I’m really geeked for this Auburn game as a basketball junkie. It’s a matchup between the 2 best coaches in the league IMO. A massive opportunity for this team!
3) As many of you know, I live in the Memphis area and have been involved in the “hoop scene” for a number of years. I’ve watched and coached against DJ Jeffries since he was at Cordova MS. Even as a 6th grader everyone was talking about how he was the next “star” from Memphis. And as he finishes up his 5th year of college…he’s just not very good. And I do wonder how much of that is just being told how great you are since you were 12 years old. And running away from challenges. And having people in your ear that don’t necessarily have your best interest in mind. I contrast that with other guys from the area - like his former HS teammate and current Bulldog, Cam Mathew’s, who many didn’t think was an SEC player and if you made me take 1 of the 2 today, I’d rather have Cam. Heck, even though Murrell was a Top 40 recruit, even he wasn’t as hyped coming out of HS, which always blew my mind because he was a DUDE! A&M has a kid who played AAU here and the coach had to beg coaches to give him a shot. He gets 20mpg as a true Soph and is going to be a really good role player in this league. I’m starting to think that if we recruit Memphis area kids we should focus on the underhyped kids because the ones who are deemed “next” in middle school always seem to be busts.
4) I loved to see Caldwell have a breakout game. He’s shown flashes before but him coming on down the stretch would be huge. We’ve yet to really see that from B-Murray but it’s coming too! I think this team is going to continue to get better as the season goes on and will be playing its best ball come March! Chris Beard is a wizard
5) Free space here for Juju. He is quickly becoming one of my fav Rebs of all time. I didn’t expect much from him coming into the season, but he’s a KILLER! MVP of the season so far IMO.
6) As I’ve said repeatedly, just get to 10 SEC wins and nothing else matters, we will be safely in! Since 2012 (when the league expanded) anytime the SEC has been at least a 5-bid league - which it’ll be this year - no team with at least 20 total wins and 10 SEC wins has been left out of the NCAA Tournament. Find a way to 5 more SEC wins!!
7) Don’t move the goalposts. Not that anyone is, but we have a Top 5 coach (and who knows how long he will be here). We started 13-0. We are 5-3 in the league. Cisse is eligible. Brandon Murray is eligible. This should be an NCAAT team. I expect to be, you should too!
