Having spent much time driving around Oxford in my life, I have never seen anything like the amount of construction currently ongoing in this area. Starting with Oxford Commons, there are 4 different areas of construction, really five if you count the Lake. Blackburn is building two apartment complexes, townhouses, and residential houses in different price ranges in five different areas. There are also likely to be multiple new restaurants, which are currently under contract, probably opening there in 2024.
On the high end, Grand Oaks has opened up two new areas and has commenced building new mansions.
There is a large condo complex, which is already partially occupied, but more condos are being constructed at Oxford Way and South Lamar-not to mention several commercial construction projects on South Lamar. Then there are a large number of road-graders currently clearing land further up Oxford Way, I would assume for more apartments.
Moving down to the campus, we have the STEM building, the largest and most expensive building ever built in Lafayette County, under construction. Then there is the Manning Center, which is in the final stages, and the new softball facility, which is in the early stages with the old stadium now gone. Just those 3 projects come to almost a quarter billion dollars.
There’s nothing really going on out West that I know of, which is a good thing because that is where all the traffic is and where city government let things get out of control. West Jackson is a mess, but at least now the new construction seems to be going elsewhere and is better planned.
Moving north, there is yet another roundabout being built at the intersection of the Lamar subdivision and Molly Bar. Again, the Lamar seems to be building houses at the speed of light, we have new residential housing coming up all over the place. There is then commercial construction on 30 with the three new roundabouts there, which resemble an amusement ride LOL- not sure why they could not do them straight like they did on Sisk?
Couple this with the announcement of the destruction of Kincannon and three new dorms and I assume the new Alpha Chi Omega House for which there is a pic outside the old Theta house, and that is a ton of housing coming on line in the near future, which we will need with 5,300 freshmen this year.
I am sure I probably missed some projects, but there must be thousands of construction workers currently employed in Oxford-including all of Water Valley. We seem to be bucking the national trend in both student enrollment and residential and commercial construction.
As we all experience the ups and down of recruiting in the NIL age, I think it’s comforting to look at the fact that our product we have to sell is constantly improving. Hopefully, we can grow and still maintain the charm of old Oxford and Ole Miss. The possibilities are exciting if we can do it all right, I cannot wait until we break ground on the new accounting building!
