Need a last-minute gift? Bourbon is always a good idea (for me, at least).
Here are the best bourbons I know that are findable (at least where I live and I live nowhere special) and relatively affordable.
1. Blanton's ($50-$65/easy to find/like liquid caramel popcorn - I love this stuff)
2. Col. E.H. Taylor Single Barrel ($65-$80 /harder to find/ brown sugar, wood and toasted almonds)
3. Four Roses S.Barrel Private Reserve ($55-$65/hard to find/depends on the mashbill, but all good)
4. Jack Daniel's Single Barrel ($40-$65/easy to find/rich and sweet with a hint of char)
5. Eagle Rare ($30-$35/easy to find/10yo hooch that's just about the best value in bourbon right now)
6. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit ($55-$65/fairly easy to find/ the best WT product; rich, woody, sweet)
7. Rowan's Creek ($35-$45/kind of hard to find/rich, almost chocolaty goodness with long finish)
8. Rock Hill Farms ($65-$75/hard to find/Floral and sweet; like E.Rare but kicked up a notch or three )
9. Old Forester 1920 ($55-$65/fairly hard to find/full-bodied and impossibly smooth for 115 proof)
10. John J Bowman Single Barrel ($55-$65/easier to find/This is Elmer T Lee, but distilled three times and barreled in Virginia; vanilla and oak; very, very good)
HM1: Woodford Reserve ($30/easy to find/no one will ever be disappointed to get Woodford)
HM2: Very Old Barton Bottled-in-Bond ($15-$20/depends/Here's what you do: Buy your friend a flask and put this stuff in there and tell him it's something really expensive -- I guarantee your friend won't know the difference and she/he will dig the flask. And you can keep the extra for yourself)
This list is irrefutable and perfect, so don't even try to argue; all of your opinions will be wrong.
Seriously I gave a bottle of Blanton's to my father-in-law for Christmas last year and he liked it so much it made him forget I was a Democrat for almost a week. No higher praise than that.
Happy Holidays.
