Episode 608 "Start to Finish"
The walkers pour in and everybody struggles with them a bit and then goes into hiding. They are separated into different groups. I'll get the less important groups out of the way before I focus on the real meat of the episode:
- Tara, Rosita and Eugene hide in some garage after Eugene has shouted the "Help!" we heard two episodes ago into the walkie talkie. Rosita is distraught, but Tara gives some pep talk and proclaims that nothing is lost yet. Eugene attempts to unlock the door leading into the house.
- Maggie barely saves herself by climbing up a guard post and that's basically all we see from her. That guard post doesn't look all that solid and the walkers may tear it down.
- Glenn and Enid are still outside and also have just one brief scene where they discuss what to do. Enid just wants to leave, Glenn disagrees, of course. It is revealed that Glenn knows about Maggie's pregnancy.
Now on to the important stuff:
- Rick, Carl, Michonne, Deanna, Jesse, Gabriel, Ron, Sam and Judith hide in Jesse's house. It is revealed that Deanna was bitten, she prepares to die and has some tearful conversations with Rick ("They are all your people now. Take care of them.") and Michonne ("Find out what you want."). Meanwhile, Ron goes insane and attacks Carl. Their fight attracts the walkers who break into the house. They are able to contain them by blocking them out with furniture but barely. Later, Carl confronts Ron and takes away his gun but doesn't tell the others about his meltdown. As the walkers threaten to take down the barricades, they decide to mess themselves up with walker intestines and leave the house. They can't take the weakened Deanna with them though who then decides that she'll take care of it herself with her gun "when she's ready". They leave and carve their way through the walker crowd while Deanna decides to not shoot herself but instead shoot some of the walkers heading towards her (we don't see her getting eaten though). The episode ends with the rest standing on the porch among the huge walker crowd and stupid little Sam repeatedly saying "Mom".
- Morgan and Carol take refuge in Morgan's house while Denise is in the basement with the wolf. After overcoming her fear, Denise attempts to treat the wolf's wound, basically joining Morgan's "let's change him" mission. Carol slipped before they made it into the house and she seems to have a concussion from the fall, which is later revealed to be a ruse to sneak into the basement. Carol wants to kill the wolf, Morgan won't let her, a fight between them ensues, Morgan knocks Carol out, the wolf knocks Morgan out and then frees himself with a knife. It is then revealed that Tara, Rosita and Eugene were in the same house the whole time and they stumble into that whole scenario. The wolf takes Denise hostage and demands their guns which they do hand over. The episode ends with the wolf and Denise leaving the house, heading towards the walker crowd.
Finally, we get a post-credits scene: Daryl, Sasha and Abraham are captured by some biker gang blocking the road. I'll just say that the final word of the episode is "Negan".
Q&A for Episode 608:
Q:Was the episode satisfying or did it feel like something big was missing ?
A:I really liked the episode, I think it's my favorite one so far this season besides JSS and it does read less eventful than it actually is, I think, because it's really well directed, very moody and dramatic and bleak, because it looks pretty awful for all of the characters. There are some really intense scenes that don't look too exciting on paper like Maggie struggling to climb the guard post but they are actually very well executed. Comic readers probably will be disappointed they don't get to see the infamous scene were Jesse is devoured and Carl gets shot in the eye, but the episode is already quite packed and I think it's fine that they didn't want to rush things (they could've done a 90-minute episode though).
Q:Anyone else dies besides Deanna? (Doesn't matter if it's unnamed characters)
A: No, we don't see anyone dying. Not even Deanna. Her fate is sealed of course, but maybe she'll show up next episode for a scene in some way before she dies. As for the other Alexandrians, there's some brief line were someone says (not sure who) something like "looks like everyone's got into safety".
Q:What do the Saviors look like ?
A:Like some grim biker gang dudes. About 8 guys on motorcycles and heavily armed. We don't see them up close besides their leader who looks...well...like a normal dude, like one of those "claimed!" people. The others are in the background, there's one creepy looking dude with long dark hair though.
Q:Who has Judith this whole time ?
A: Judith is in a crib upstairs in Jesse's house in the room where Deanna rests. There's actually a false scare scene where Rick comes in and sees Deanna leaning over the crib and thinks she's a walker, but before he kills her with an ax she screams "I'm still alive!". He says someone should always be with Deanna now and not just Judith. Later, when they go outside, she's under Carl's walker gut poncho
Qoes someone say the title of the episode? In what context?
A:I think the episode title is something Deanna says while talking with Michonne about their hopes and dreams, something like "I did what I wanted to achieve in life from start to finish".
Q:What does Deanna talk to Rick and Michonne about ?
A:She writes letters for her sons which she gives to Rick and she tells him he has to take care of them just like he takes care of his group because they're all his group now and that's the reason why he saved Spencer in the previous episode, because he instinctively knows that they all belong together now and have to take care of each other. Michonne tells her she looked at the plans she made for the city and she thinks they really may work out, even now. Deanna says she's very happy and lucky that she got to work with her family for a better future and that's all she ever wanted. She asks what Michonne's personal big dream in life is, she answers she doesn't know and Deanna challenges her to find out.
Q:How/Why do Rick and the others end up at Jessie's house ?
A:Because it's close, I guess. Rick and Deanna struggle with the walkers in the beginning (where Deanna is bitten, she ends up in the middle of a walker sandwich before Rick saves her, though her bite is only revealed later) and then Jesse joins the fight and leads them to safety.
Q:Can you describe the entire Morgan/Carol scene ? I know wolfman escapes but why doesn't he kill them ?
A:The scene goes like this: Carol bursts into the basement where Denise is treating the wolf's wound. She tells her to leave him alone and points a knife at him. Her concussion doesn't seem entirely faked as she is quite shaky and she's sweating and she looks weakened and a little hysterical. Morgan comes in and protects the wolf with his stick. Carol says that she doesn't want to kill Morgan but she will if she has to. Morgan says he won't let that happen. They start to fight and Morgan knocks Carol out by throwing her to the ground. He has lost his stick though. The wolf grabs it with his tied up hands and knocks Morgan out. Then he takes the knife from Morgan's belt and frees himself. He actually wants to kill them and Denise tries to talk him out of it, but then Tara and the others suddenly drop in and he uses Denise as a shield with the knife to her throat. He demands the guns, they hand them over and he leaves with Denise. I guess he could just shoot everyone once he has the guns...well, but that would probably be inconvenient for the show.
Q:How does it end ? (Not counting the after-credits)
A:With a moody montage where we get another look at all of the characters in peril (except the Daryl group). The last shot is Sam saying "Mom" several times while they slowly walk hand in hand through the walker crowd.
