Thoughts on student-athlete's English

I think the criticism of Chad Kelly’s ‘English’ is grossly unfair. First and perhaps foremost, I don’t know how many of us could or would do better under similar circumstances. Kids are asked questions and often have microphones shoved in front of them. They have a right to be nervous. I hazard a guess that most Grove posts that contain at least 4 sentences have a grammatical or spelling error of some sort. Keep in mind that people who post, and this includes me, have had the time to review what was written before the post goes live. There are some posts I cannot even understand due to the grammar.

College is not for every kid that completes High School. For good or bad, if a kid wants a real chance at the NFL he must in essence complete at least the equivalent of 5 semesters of college. That said, I believe that up to 2 courses should be offered in basic communication and be required for scholarship athletes. Even if the student athlete isn’t going pro or going to graduate, such courses like that can teach a life skill that should serve him well. It would certainly be a good addition to a General Studies degree.

P.S. English is a tough language. If you are a reckless driver, your insurance rates go up. If you are a wreckless driver, your insurance rates go down. …and yes, I had to confirm that ’wreckless’ is NOT a real word.
