OLE MISS REBELS
1989 Throwback Helmets, Worn in 2014
Ole Miss got on the modern alternate uniform bandwagon before the 2013 season when the Rebels introduced sets of navy and white uniform pants in addition to their traditional gray bottoms to mix and match with their trio of tops. For the most part, Ole Miss still sports a classic look, which is how they were able to produce one of the best college football throwbacks of the 2014 season.

Since 1995, the Rebels have won navy blue helmets that featured a red stripe and red script “Ole Miss” on the side. The look replaced a similar style powder blue helmet that the team wore from 1983 to 1994, though powder blue helmets were worn in Oxford as far back as 1948. As a tribute to the late Chucky Mullins, who was paralyzed during a game against Vanderbilt in 1989, Ole Miss wore the powder blue lids in the team’s 2014 matchup with Memphis.

Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze and athletic director Ross Bjork hatched the plan months ahead of time, and unveiled the helmets to the team a few days before the game.

“Coach Freeze always comes into the team meetings with a gift, and he pulled out this box,” wide receiver Laquon Treadwell told Austin Miller of OleMissSports.com. “And then he pulled out a blue helmet. We were all shocked. We didn’t say anything. And then we went crazy.”

Somehow, the team kept the retro helmets a secret all the way through pre-game warm ups (in which the Rebels wore navy lids with Mullins’ No. 38 on the side) before taking the field in the powder blues just before kickoff.
