Thornberry, Wolcott Tee Off At U.S. Amateur

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Ole Miss junior Ben Wolcott and incoming freshman Braden Thornberry both fired a 1-over 71 in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur Championship Monday at the Olympia Fields Country Club.
Wolcott, a Dickson, Tennessee native, started on the back nine of the par-70, 7,234-yard North Course and carded one birdie at the par-4 No. 12 to make the turn with a 35. Wolcott posted two birdies on the par-5 No. 6 and par-4 No. 8 to get back to even on the front nine and finished the round T61st with a 1-over 71.
Thornberry, an incoming freshman from Olive Branch, Mississippi, also carded a 1-over 71 on the North Course in the afternoon round. He fired a steady round with two birdies, one bogey and a double to finish the day in a tie for 61st. Both players will tee off on the par-70, 7,037-yard South Course for Tuesday’s second round.
The top 64 players after tomorrow’s second round advance to match-play competition beginning Wednesday. Six rounds of match play begin on Aug. 19 and the championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Aug. 23.
