Ole Miss was 1 for 5 against Memphis on 3rd and 4th and 1. That’s obviously really bad but it’s not all the offensive line’s fault. This is not an argument that Ole Miss has a good offensive line, but it doesn't mean I can't take up for them some. They are placed in difficult situations at times given their skill set. Feel free to disagree with me. This is just my opinion. Here’s an example at the 1:07 mark of this video.
On the 4th and 1 that really was the turning point of the game, Memphis won the play before the ball was even snapped.
Memphis has 8 guys lined up to the right of the center, due in part to the trips to the right. Ole Miss got to the line and quickly snapped the ball, but the play was a toss directly into the teeth of the Memphis defense that was very prepared for it. Even if you count the center, Ole Miss is outnumbered 8 to 6 on the right side in terms of blockers to defenders. The play was doomed. Just going by memory, it doesn’t seem like the quick snap has had hardly any success for Ole Miss under Freeze. The defense was lined up perfectly and the quick snap kept an audible from happening.
It also seems like Bell was responsible for blocking the end that’s lined up on Rawlings on a play that’s going outside of him. Rawlings pulled and knocked out one of the five Tigers lined up about two yards off the ball. Since the play is going outside, I would assume that means Bell would have to get around the DE for a reach block. That’s a lot of ask for out of anyone, but especially Bell who obviously has limitations. The end was immediately in the backfield because Bell couldn’t get to him in time.
The outside linebacker at the bottom of the screen is who actually made the tackle in the backfield. It appears Engram, who is lined up in a pseudo wing position in the trips, was responsible for him. Engram whiffed on the block and gave the LB a free shot at Wilkins. The thing is though, even if the offense blocked this play perfectly, it was not going to succeed. Memphis was all over it. There were too many blue shirts on that side of the ball for it to work.
This was a 3rd and 1. Ole Miss ran a counter with Judd to the left, and the small crease created closed up before he made it to the hole. However, that's an 11 yard cushion on Treadwell at the top of the screen.
