BASEBALL: SEC Weekly honors

Co-Player of the Week: Wehiwa Aloy, Arkansas

Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy slashed a team-leading .571/.667/1.071 with two home runs and five RBI over four games, helping the Razorbacks complete an Opening Weekend series sweep against Washington State before winning two games, including a pair of ranked wins over TCU and Michigan. Aloy recorded three multi-hit games and two-multi RBI performances during the week, including a career high-tying four-hit effort in the win against the Wolverines. Aloy began his week with a two-hit, two-RBI game vs. Washington State, also drawing a pair of walks in the contest. Aloy was a triple away from the cycle against Michigan, finishing the game 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI to go along with two singles, a double and a solo home run.

Co-Player of the Week: Will Hodo, Alabama

Alabama’s Will Hodo helped guide the Crimson Tide to a perfect 5-0 mark during the week by going 7-for-18 (.389) with two doubles, two home runs, 10 runs scored, three walks, three hit-by-pitch and six RBI. Hodo reached base in all five games, playing a role in the Tide scoring 10-plus runs in three of its five matchups. Hodo punctuated his week with a walk-off, three-run home run in the Tide’s 12-10 win over Ohio State on Feb. 23 to help produce the largest comeback victory in program history.

Pitcher of the Week: Kyson Witherspoon, Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s Kyson Witherspoon struck out a career-high 12 batters and walked none as the Sooners won their first game of the Round Rock Classic, 3-2, over Minnesota en route to a 3-0 weekend with top-10 wins over No. 7 Oregon State and No. 2 Virginia. Witherspoon hurled seven innings of one-run ball and allowed just three hits. After surrendering his first home run of the season on a leadoff homer in the first, Witherspoon proceeded to retire the next 13 batters faced, snapping the streak with a single in the fifth inning.

Co-Freshman of the Week: Brendan Lawson, Florida

Florida’s Brendan Lawson drove in a team-high nine RBI while producing hits and RBI in all four wins as Florida went 4-0 and swept Dayton. He recorded a home run, double, four runs scored, two walks and one steal on top of his nine runs driven in. Lawson cranked a grand slam for his first-career home run in game two vs. Dayton. He started all four games at first base and finished with a 1.00 fielding percentage across 31 chances

Co-Freshman of the Week: Bub Terrell, Auburn

Auburn’s Bub Terrell recorded seven hits last week, including a pair of multi-hit games to help lead the Tigers to a 5-0 record. He scored Auburn’s walk-off run in the matchup with No. 24 Troy after starting the ninth inning with a single to center and advancing to third as the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Terrell turned in a season-high three hits in the series opener vs. Wright State, including his first career home run – a three-run shot in the first inning that gave Auburn a 5-0 lead. On Sunday, Terrell hit a solo homer with two outs in the seventh to increase the lead and spark four runs between the seventh and eighth innings.

HOOPS: SEC update

SEC Co-Players of the Week – Alabama guard Mark Sears and Tennessee guard Chaz Lanier were named SEC Co-Players of the Week. Sears, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior from Muscle Shoals, Ala., averaged 32.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals against No. 15 Missouri and No. 17 Kentucky. Scoring 65 points on just 37 field goal attempts, he shot 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range and 94.4 percent (17-of-18) from the free throw line on the week. He opened the week with a 35-point performance against the Tigers and then followed that up with 30 points against the Wildcats. He became the first player in Division I this season to have back-to-back 30-point games against ranked teams and is just the second player to do so in the last 20 years. Lanier, a 6-foot-5, 207-pound fifth-year senior from Nashville, Tenn., scored 30 points and had five rebounds in a win at No. 7 Texas A&M. He became just the second SEC player in the last 20 seasons (2005‐25) to score 30‐plus points in an AP top‐10 road win, including the only one to do so in league play. Lanier tied for the second‐most made 3‐pointers in a game in Tennessee history, becoming just the fourth person—fifth occasion—to hit eight in a contest.

SEC Freshman of the Week – Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears, a 6-foot-4, 182-pound freshman from Joliet, Ill., averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals against No. 2 Florida and No. 21 Mississippi State. He registered a game‐high 22 points at No. 2 Florida (tied a career high with four 3‐pointers) along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Against Mississippi State, he notched his first career double‐double with 27 points, a career‐high 10, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Fears became just the second SEC player, regardless of class, since at least the 1996‐97 season to register at least 27 points, at least 10 assists and at least 5 rebounds in a game. His 14 free throw attempts against Mississippi State tied a career high and his 11 makes were one shy of his career best
