I’m one of the few Ole Miss fans that considers basketball right there with football, and certainly over baseball.
What we’ve seen in two years is incredible. Our program has had small moments of momentum. I was in Kansas City in 2013 when we knocked off Wisconsin, and it felt like if we got past LaSalle and into the second weekend, AK was going to start rolling up tourney appearances.
However, what we’re seeing with this coach is different. Beard has taken a team without any semblance of NBA talent and turned it into a 7 seed floor. This team has two top 25 wins over BYU and Louisville in the non-conference. Wins over Kentucky, Bama, and Tennessee in league play.
Imagine what he’s going to do when we give him the resources to go get NBA talent.
I was at nearly every game this year, and while the crowds haven’t been incredible, there’s juice in that building when we start getting it rolling.
I don’t know what Beard’s goals and ambitions are, particularly relating to how he feels about this stop in his career.
But with Boyce and a former basketball All-American as AD, he could do worse. We’ve got to do what it takes to retain him. I really think we’ll be closer to a top 10 program in 5 years if we can get him to stay.
