Alabama going with right-hander Garrett McMillan tonight. Originally from Tuscaloosa, McMillan wasn't much of a prospect out of high school but changed his body and looks much better on his 6-foot-4 frame after a couple years at Shelton State. He's been an innings-eater for the Crimson Tide, going at least five innings in all seven starts and at least six innings in five of the seven starts. Florida got to him for five runs in five innings, but otherwise he's been good. He shut out Texas and gave up three hits in six innings, gave up one run in 5.1 innings against MSU and had a quality start with three runs in six innings against Texas A&M.
He's a strike-thrower more than a volume strikeout guy, but he did fan nine Aggies last weekend and has 44 strikeouts and nine walks in 41.1 innings. McMillan has thrown at least 96 pitches in his last three starts and he's seventh in the SEC with a 0.99 WHIP.
He's pretty straightforward for a staff ace in the SEC. McMillan has a good changeup that I assume you'll see a lot, and the breaking ball is sharper than it was in JUCO when it was kind of loopy. He's a standard right-hander who throws strikes and has average velocity.
On a side note, it's a big night for Hunter Elliott. Ole Miss is playing matchups and scouting reports with its pitching staff right now which says both that the roster has holes and Mike is showing less rigidity than in past seasons. Both those things can be true. Elliott finding a way into the fifth feels critical to try to set up some semblance of relief options for the weekend.
