I’d say the Anora box office numbers are more indicative of the state of movie theaters than it is the academy being pretentious. Anora is very sexual but isn’t really a movie that is too high brow for the masses. I like going to the movies and will regularly go and there are less than 5 people in the theater. That’s true for almost anything. Had they given best picture to Emilia Perez I’d be right there with you.
The problem they have is that the only movies that do well at theaters are franchises, and, to be fair, that’s not what they should be awarding. Dune Part 2 could’ve been deserving and widely watched but for some reason it got very little traction.
