I always fill out multiple brackets — one with my gut and then a few where I use all the different metrics like KenPom and Torvik. Highest ranking moves on. I even used different time intervals for ones like Torvik to take recency into account. I also do one that follows recent trends based on seeds advancing and higher seeds with the best probability to advance…in short, I really nerd out.
All of those brackets are complete garbage after Day 1. This has been the case for the last 3 tournaments.
Meanwhile, my “gut” bracket was nearly perfect (Mizzou my only incorrect one) yesterday.
Here’s the long and short…trust your gut. There is no hacking the brackets. The predictive metrics should get thrown out the window…every year my gut bracket outperforms the “brain” brackets.
Sadly, I didn’t use my gut bracket in any of my money pools. I would’ve won 2 of my 3 pools with my gut bracket last year. And still didn’t learn my lesson lol. This will be my last year making that mistake.
(It’s also why my wife who doesn’t watch basketball is the reigning champ in our family pool).
