DALLAS – In Monday’s final qualifying round at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas, Texas, Ole Miss junior golfer Cameron Tankersley secured one of the seven spots to punch his ticket to the 125th United States Open. Golf’s third major of the year will be played at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania June 12-15.
Tankersley turned in 36 holes of gritty golf, posting (134, -8) to secure a tie for fourth in the Monday qualifier.
In round one, Tankersley carded three-under 68 to sit T18 after 18 holes. Needing to make a charge up the leaderboard, he did just that, posting a final round of five-under 66.
Tankersley would card a bogey-free two-under on his front nine to shoot 33, getting him to five-under with nine to play.
He would add another birdie on No. 10 to jump to six-under.
As the cut line crept to seven, Tankersley would find another birdie on the par 5 16th. He would birdie the last at 18 to reach eight-under for the qualifier.
Tankersley entered the clubhouse T5 with most of the field still on the course. The cut line remained at seven-under keeping Tankersley one stroke clear of a potential playoff, securing his spot in his first major championship.
The Dickson, Tennessee native comes off a T11 finish at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional where he carded (213, -3). Tankersley looks to help Ole Miss to a national title run beginning this Friday at the NCAA Championship.
