Can someone explain why Bjork was gonna hire McElwain

Had Freeze left in 2014? I know the obvious answer is, well, it's Ross. I've heard several times before that McElwain would've been the guy, but it's never really registered how odd that would've been to have a conference rival steal OM's coach, and then OM take UF's unwanted coach. I know Florida won the east a couple times when the division was down, but what was Bjork thinking?
